Braid Parade

For today’s post, I will be adding something new to Feathers & Chains – Hair!! Today is all about braids: waterfall braids, milkmaid braids, fishtail braids, Dutch braids, and crown braids. There will be pictures along with directions of how to try this braid for yourself and links to some of my favorite YouTube hair tutorials.

1) Waterfall Braid:

How to:

1st Step: Prep Hair by brushing it and smoothing it from front to back.

2nd Step: Start the braid. Start with a 2 inch section at the crown of the head near a center part. Start by following the hairline.

3rd Step: Separate hair into 3 strands and take the strand closest to your face; put it underneath the top strand. Take the strand closest to the top of your head and do 2 turns. Braid hair likes this for about half an inch to an inch.

4th Step: For the waterfall part, take a strand from the top of the head and feed that into the braid with the hair. Bring it into your braid like you would normally, but then bring it all the way through and let it hang down. Another strand from the braid is going to go on top of it and hold it in place.

As you braid, what you’re doing is grabbing from the top and bringing that through to hand down, then continue the braid grab hair from below the braid and add that to the braid to replace what you dropped.

2) Milkmaid Braid:

How to:

1st Step: Brush your hair through.

2nd Step: Part hair down the middle so that both sides have equal amounts of hair.

3rd Step: Braid down each side and secure the end with a hair tie.

4th Step: Pull one plait upwards and across your head like a headband. Use hair grips to fix in place.

5th Step: Pull other side up and over the 1st plait. Secure with hair grips and hairspray.

3) Fishtail Braid:

How to:

1st Step: Push all hair behind your shoulders. Divide hair into 2 sections down the back.

2nd Step: Take a small outer piece of one of the 2 sections and cross it over and add it to the inside of the other section.

3rd Step: Now make the same exact cross this time using the other section.

4th Step: Stop braiding once you feel the sections getting smaller and then tie off with an elastic.

4) Dutch Braid:

How to:

1st Step: Prepare your hair by making sure it is brushed and free of tangles.

2nd Step: Brush your hair back straight so that there is no part and if you don’t intend on braiding your bangs, push them over to the side.

3rd Step: Grab a piece of hair from the top of your head. If you want to include your bangs, start this section directly above your forehead. Otherwise, pick up a section from the very top of your head. Gather a piece ranging from 3–5 inches (7.6–12.7 cm) wide, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.

4th Step: Cross the right strand under the center strand.

5th Step: Cross the left strand under the center strand.

6th Step: Add more hair to your braid by picking up small strands of hair as you go.

7th Step: Tie off with an elastic at the end and spray with a light hairspray.

5) Crown Braid:

How to:

1st Step: Part your hair in the middle, then separate into two sections. Secure one side while you work with the other, so they don't get mixed up.

2nd Step: Take the loose side and start at the nape of the neck, splitting it into three strands.

3rd Step: Do an 'inside-out' French braid or Dutch Braid, crossing the strands underneath each other instead of over. Work your way around the side of the head, keeping the braid fairly tight.

4th Step: Work across the top of the forehead until you finish the braid, and secure the end with an elastic. Just let it hang until you complete the other side.

5th Step: With the opposite side, you start at the TOP of the head, instead of the bottom. Split it into three parts and do the same inside-out braid you did before, but work around the side of the head, finishing near the nape.

6th Step: With each braid tied with an elastic, you can secure them with Bobbi pins to keep them in place, and tuck the tails underneath the other braid to hide them. It should look like a "crown" of braids, ringing about your head. Finish with a bit of hairspray.

I hope you guys enjoyed this new hair post and there will be many more to come! My favorite is the milkmaid braid and I had to add Zoella's tutorial in here because shes' my favorite fashion/beauty/lifestyle guru and I LOVE HER SO MUCH. Thanks for reading! <3
