Fashion Designer Week - Alexander Wang
American fashion designer and creative director of Balenciaga, Alexander Wang, was born on December 26th, 1983. At 19, Alexander moved to the fashion capital of the United States, New York City, to attend Parson's The New School for Design. In 2005, after two years of Parson's, he decided to pursue the launch of his own fashion label, which mainly consisted of knitwear. In Fall 2007, he presented a complete ready-to-wear women's collection on the New York runway for the first time. Wang received a great deal of recognition from the fashion world for his edgy street wear designs. In 2008, he won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the prize being a $20,000 reward to expand your business. A year later, he won the CFDA's Swarovski Award for Womenswear Designer of the Year, a very prestigous award. In the same year, 2009, Women's T by Alexander Wang was launched, followed by Men's T by Alexander Wang in 2010.
Wang's lines are now stocked globally in more than 700 stores including luxury department stores such as Barney's New York, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Dover Street Market, Browns, and Net-a-porter. As many designers, retailers, and marketers say - "You know you've made it in the fashion industry when your designs are sold in Bergdorf Goodman."
Alexander Wang is known for his urban designs and his use of mainly black as the predominant color, but uses other colors as well such as orange, dusty purple, aqua, and hot pink. HIs first store opened in Soho, New York on February 17th, 2011. A huge achievement for Wang was announced on November 30th, 2012 by Women's Wear Daily. They reported that Wang has been named Creative Director at French fashion house Balenciaga after Nicolas Ghesquiere left the company.
Wang has coined the now famous term "model off-duty style" when asked to describe how he pictured the girls who would wear his fashions to look. It's supposed to be the laid-back, chill but still effortlessly glamorous look of models when they are not modelling. I think it takes a true genius to come up with such a creative way to describe things. More exciting news came for Alexander and his legion of fans when in 2014, it was announced that Wang would be collaborating with fashion retailer H&M to design a more affordable collection that could be found at most of H&M's stores.
